MAG UPDATE
Welcome to week six of term as we creep closer and closer to our competition season. Myles, Andrew and myself will be meeting this week to discuss final levels for the boys for 2009. We ask that parents respect our decisions as coaches and understand gymnasts will do the level that they are capable of achieving at.
Notes went out last week for the Gold Coast Invitational on Sunday May 3rd. There is no rush on the return of notes but we appreciate parents that have returned already. Please ensure you have notes returned by the cut off date of Saturday 28th March. Session times will be advised after the closing date. The next competition after this will be the Lawnton Invitational where gymnasts will levels test. The date is Sunday 17th May with notes going out shortly.
If you have a look at the new look Gymnastics Queensland website, have a look for Gold Coast boys Troy Stockman and Domonic Bedggood on the front page on the flash sscreen for MAG. Goto www.gymqld.org.au
Men's gymnastics in Queensland is Governed by the MAG SMC (Sports Management Committee) and after the elections for 2009 I have been appointed to the SMC as a Regional representative. So now the Gold Coast boys will have a voice in Queensland.
Remember to watch this Wednesday 4th March at 7.30 PM on Channel 7 for Australia's Got Talent. As I am sure you are all aware MAG CT 2 gymnast David Tanner will be appearing with his dance partner Macy. If you get a chance send a vote their way when the phone neumbers are released at the end of the show or SMS to the number. I also make a guest appearance in another act but you don't need to vote as I can't win as I am not an official contestant.
Don't forget to order all competition attire prior to 6 weeks before competition, this will allow for delays from our supplier. Try to have ordered by the latest mid March and when measuring do not allow extra room for your son as the supplier will do this. If you are still unsure what your son needs please see your son's coach. Training attire should be here by the end of this week or early next week, so if you need training attire check with me if they are in or see the office.
MAG CT 1 boys now need ankle weights. Most boys need 0.5 KG weights for each ankle and these may be purchased from Rebel or other sporting outlets. Some boys may need heavier ankle weights so please check with Brett before purchasing.
All boys in CT programs must wear running or jogging shoes to gym. As some programs are now running as part of their training we would appreciate all boys to wear them to training. School shoes are not acceptable.
Have a great week.
Brett

MAG UPDATE
Thank you to all the MAG parents that attended the Competition teams meeting on Saturday, we had close to 100% attendance from the MAG parents. It looks like the boys are starting to settle back down into the routine of training and are working hard towards the 2009 competition season which is getting close. Just to reinforce some issues brought up in the meeting.
-
Boys training attire has now been ordered with a large stock due to arrive late February or early March. The quality is excellent and is coming from a very reputable supplier. I will let you all know when the stock arrives and can be purchased directly from the office.
-
Boys competition uniforms need to be orderd 6 weeks prior to competition. With our first competition on the 3rd May we suggest if you need new competition attire or are ordering for the first time, please do this mid to late March. Boys competition attire is as follows - White Competition Longs, Competition Leotard, Competition Shorts, Club Tracksuit, Club Polo (coming soon), Gold Coast Backpack. All of these may be ordered at the office. Some may be in stock some may need to be ordered, so please do not leave it to the last minute. As a reminder no uniform, no competition without any exceptions.
-
MAG State Squad is quickly approaching with the first session on Sunday 15th March. A time schedule is currently not available but we will let you know. As a guide, last year level 4 boys were on in the morning and the 5 & 6 boys were on at lunchtime. Myles will be at both sessions and myself at the afternoon session only. May I suggest that the boys in level 4 try to organise a car pool with the group. Parents of gymnasts in levels 5 & 6, please let me know if they need transport as I will be driving to Chandler and then returning for that session only.

Thank you to all the parents that are keeping the communication pathways open and keeping us informed if your child will not make a gymnastics session. It does make our job easier and we are not asking gymnasts why they missed training. So as a reminder if your son is going to be away call us or email me brett@goldcoastgymnastics.com
-
Good Luck to David Tanner in the forthcoming semi finals of Australia's Got Talent. We are not 100% certain when it will be televised but we will keep you informed and when it goes to air help David and his dance partner through to the finals by voting. A certain coach that shall remain unamed is also appearing in a different act but please turn off when that comes on.
Have a great rest of the week and I will get these updates happening on a weekly basis.

AHOLA GYMFEST 2009
Over the January holidays two of our Senior gymnasts represented the club in the Ahola Gymfest held in Hawaii.
Both Alicia Biggs and Tiarne Holloway aged 12 left for Hawaii on January 13th where they competed in the Level 7 division over one day of competition. Both girls did a fantastic job for their first overseas competition placing 11th and 12th overall.

MY HAWAII EXPERIENCE
Tiarne Holloway:
The 10hr plane trip was very long and boring, although I did manage to get 5hrs sleep. We arrived in Hawaii about 6:45am and I was very tired. We headed straight to where we were staying. The hotel was really nice and it was near the beach.
The next couple of days we had training, which we had to take 2 buses there and back. The buses had a lot of scary people that loved to sit next to Nadia. The comp was really good because when you had finished you could go straight to the next apparatus. The comp was over in 2hrs. At presentation everyone recieved medals for each apparatus and a trophy for all around regardless of placings. Even the girl who came last left happy… The competition was a lot of fun.
The next day Nadia joined us on a tour to Pearl Harbour and around Hawaii. After Hawaii my family and I went to L.A and visited Disneyland, Universal Studios, Beverley Hills, Hollywood and Venice beach. It was a great holiday but its great to be back home to see all my friends again!

MAG NEWS UPDATE
Welcome back to all the MAG CTeam boys and to a new year. I hope all the boys and their families enjoyed their Christmas break and the gymnasts are now prepared to put in the hard work as we head into Pre Competition mode. It is very important that boys just don't simply miss training in January because it is the holiday season but they keep up with their strength, flexibility, conditioning and skill development. This time will set the foundations for the rest of the year.
We will be having a MAG meeting early this year with a date to be advised. This is an opportunity for me to meet with all MAG parents and go through the forthcoming competitions, training, uniforms and trips, plus an opportunity to ask any questions. As soon as the date is set we will let you know but it is importatnt that one parent at least attends.
Congratulations to MAG CTeam Two gymnast David Tanner for his sucessful audition for "Australia's got Talent". David is in round two and will be filmed for TV mid January in Melbourne. The show will go to air in February on Channel 7 where we can show our support and vote for him to hopefully see him make the finals. Good luck to David and his sister Jane who also made the heats in round four as well.
The MAG Team is currently looking into a MAG overseas trip for 2010. Hopefully I will have information ready shortly, but this will give the boys something to work towards this year.
As coaches we are being asked what level gymnasts are in for this year by parents and athletes. We set the gymnasts skills they need to attain to compete in certain levels. We do what is best by the athletes and will ensure all gymnasts are placed in a level suitable for them.
Some gymnasts are still not bringing their high bar loops and chalk to gym. Please ensure if your sons coach wants them to have these, they must bring them to each training session.
Time off in 2009, will be set shortly. The boys this year will have 4 weeks off which will be set by the resepective coaches. Two weeks will again be at Christmas, with two 1 week breaks at the school holiday period. Gymnasts that qualify for Nationals to represent Queensland will have a different break to the other boys. This information should be available for the MAG Parent meeting.
Regular updates will continue to happen when term 1 resumes.
Brett
